I’ll be honest, I’m not an impulse buyer. I’m the kind of person who needs a few days (sometimes weeks) to weigh my purchasing options before I decide to “add to cart.” But the Brick device was different. Just one Instagram ad and there I was on the checkout page. A physical device that blocks my phone? I couldn’t buy it fast enough.
As someone who works from home, I’m at war with my phone. On good days, I master the art of yeeting it into a bedroom drawer, only to crawl back to it to review a Slack notification or ad copy I saved. On bad days, scrolling social media keeps me from feeling raw emotions. It’s made to keep me desensitized when I’m not emotionally in charge.
But that’s not how I want to live my life. Over the last year, I’ve worked hard to cultivate boredom, imagination, and remove myself from instant gratification and disassociation habits. I’ll wait in long lines, choose books over TV shows, and go on walks without my earbuds. The social media scroll is the one thing I haven’t fully mastered (Because, hint: it’s made to be addictive). That’s why I’m so obsessed with the Brick device.
The Brick is a viral device that creates a physical barrier between you and distracting apps. To use it, just scan the Brick (an NFC tag) and choose which apps you want to block. You can even set up different modes that automatically block apps so you don’t have to scan in and out. My favorite thing about Brick is how it turns your phone back into a tool. You block only the apps that waste your time and keep your phone, calculator, and music accessible.

As a professional copywriter, I see through a lot of clever online marketing. I don’t buy things because they have shiny promises and pretty words; I buy them when I genuinely believe they’ll solve my problems. The Brick device claims to be better than productivity apps and it genuinely delivers.
Here’s where it stands out to me…
✔️You can’t cheat the system. You can’t log into a site on another browser or re-download the app. The Brick device is smarter than you and genuinely doesn’t have “work-arounds” like some productivity apps.
✔️You can’t unlock apps from your phone. One of the problems with productivity apps is, they’re so easy to unlock. All you have to do is pick up your device and have a small lapse in judgment. With the Brick, you physically have to walk to the Brick device (mine’s on my fridge) to unlock it.
✔️You don’t need a “dumb phone.” These devices have gained popularity for people who want to live unplugged. But they’re such a pain to use in real-time. We need the ease of ordering DoorDash, using our GPS, and texting without going back to the Dark Ages. Brick makes it easy to function normally without apps that distract.
✔️There’s no subscription. This is the feature that made me instantly purchase the Brick device. Most productivity apps charge a $15/month fee, but you only need to purchase the Brick once. Sign me up.
It’s super easy to make the Brick a part of your routine. You’ll use the physical Brick device and a partner app to lock your phone and set different modes. To put your phone in “Brick mode,” either tap your phone against the Brick or hold down a button in the app. “Unbricking” your phone is a little more difficult. You’ll need to find the physical Brick device and tap it to unlock.

Let’s chat pros and cons of the Brick device.
✔️Analogue living without technology from the Dark Ages. I’m obsessed with analogue and slow living trends, but I’m also obsessed with my Audible subscription. You won’t find me scavenging thrift stores for a CD player that barely functions. Give me the modern technology without the bad habits; I’m here for it.
✔️Set your own schedule. You can automatically block apps before bedtime or during work hours. You’ll always need to scan the Brick device to unlock your phone, but not to lock it.
✔️Create a physical barrier between you and your phone. You have to find the Brick device and scan it to unlock apps.
✔️Unlock your phone intentionally. Think before you scroll.
✔️Choose which apps to block. You can lock TikTok or Instagram, but keep texting apps available for easy communication.
✔️Stop mindless scrolling. Be online when you want to be, not when you don’t.
✔️Block both apps and websites. There’s no creative “workaround” once you’ve blocked something from your phone. You can block both apps and distracting websites.
✔️Works with multiple phones. You don’t need one Brick device per person, you can block multiple phones with the same device.
✔️Brick sends a weekly recap. In case you get out of the habit of Brick-ing your phone, the brand sends you a weekly recap so you can check your stats.
❌It’s expensive. The Brick device costs $59 (or $53 when you use my discount code). In my mind, it’s a small price to pay for having more control over your screen time. And, when compared against a subscription app-blocking service that costs a monthly fee, it’s a steal.
❌I wonder about the longevity. I’ve had my Brick device for about four months. I haven’t experienced any glitching or issues with it whatsoever. But with other devices like the Oura ring turning into subscription services later on, I do wonder about its longevity, especially at the current price point.
❌I wish there were more community focus. Give me a little competition, Brick. I know I’d be crushing my goals if I were competing against my friends for 20 hours/day offline.
❌There’s no travel mode. My phone automatically Bricks at 7:00 PM, which is awesome when I’m home. But if I’m traveling, I need to be super conscious to bring the Brick device with me. Otherwise, my phone self-locks.
