You’ve arrived! Welcome to The Everywhere Girl, a slow living blog that helps you cultivate a sense of home in any space or season. I’m Stephanie, resident writer, chronic wanderer, and hospitality enthusiast. I’m so glad you’re part of the community.
My love letter to home. These notes come to you from across the continent, across the globe, and across the hall.
Steeped in faith, literature, and self-discovery, they’re my way of finding home within myself, and with all of you.
I’ll admit, I’m a castor oil pack skeptic. When you have a chronic illness, it’s hard to believe that home remedies can make much of a difference for ever-present fatigue, skin issues, and poor sleep quality. But for better or worse, I welcomed castor oil packs into my try-anything-until-something-works phase of recovery, and now I tell everyone about them. Here’s my review of my favorite castor oil pack from Queen of the Thrones, and how to use it for healthy detox.
A castor oil pack is a cotton cloth that holds castor oil directly on the skin for multiple hours at a time. It’s a holistic application method that keeps castor oil close to the skin without mess. To use it, you’ll unwrap your cotton pack and apply a few pumps of castor oil to the inside. Then, wrap the pack around your liver and tie a knot. You can wear the pack for a few hours or overnight without risking castor oil stains on your clothes or sheets. Even though it’s external, the castor oil pack is supposed to support healthy detox and bile flow in the liver. Makeshift castor oil packs date back to ancient Egypt, and you can still make your own with cotton and plastic wrap (though that’s the messier option).
Castor oil might have just resurfaced on the internet, but it’s been used as a home remedy for thousands of years. It’s pressed from the seeds of the Ricinus communis plant, and is known to improve bloating, soothe disrupted skin, and naturally detox the liver.
Here are some benefits reported from using castor oil packs:
Castor oil packs were part of my try-everything-until-something-works phase of recovery. After Lyme disease and mold illness, liver health is one of my primary health concerns. Friends recommended castor oil packs as a supportive natural remedy, and I figured I had nothing to lose.
The biggest change I noticed was how dramatically castor oil packs improved my sleep quality. It’s recommended to use yours just 2 — 3 times per week, and I’d save my castor oil packs for days when I had to wake up early. Even if I slept more hours without them, I always felt better when I used them. There were other benefits, too, like less brain fog, fatigue, and acne.
The quality of any oil you use these days matters. Hexane processing is the most common extraction method for seed oils in the United States, and it can oxidize delicate oils with heat and chemical exposure. The most important thing you can do for your new castor oil habit is choose a high-quality oil, especially since it goes directly on your skin. I love how Queen of Thrones prioritizes this, too.
Total honesty: I wouldn’t use castor oil packs if it weren’t for the innovation of Queen of the Thrones. As a general rule, mess is not my thing. I don’t like using sticky oils on my skin, and I paid top dollar for an organic cotton mattress that I refuse to ruin. Queen of the Thrones is the only castor oil pack distributor I’ve found that actually does keep the mess contained.
The design of the pack is comfortable and easy to use for any body type (which is so important for health products), and I’ve kept mine in good shape for months at a time.
I genuinely feel like a different person when I use my castor oil pack overnight, and I wish you could use it daily (it’s recommended 2 — 3 times per week).
Since holistic health copywriter is my day job, I’ve read so much about hexane-processing, and I’m convinced it’s this low-quality production method that makes people believe castor oil “doesn’t work.” Queen of the Thrones prioritizes cold-pressed and organic oil, so the oil stays intact without oxidizing.
✔️ Organic cotton for your pack. Most textiles are full of flame retardants, pesticides, and plastics, which just aren’t the best choice for skin contact.
✔️ Third-party tested oil. Holistic health brands usually aren’t required to pass any quality control testing. So, third-party testing ensures their claims are actually true.
✔️ Less mess. Queen of Thrones uses a super intentional design to keep castor oil off your clothing and sheets. There’s cotton on the inside and plastic on the outside so nothing leaks through.
✔️ So many castor oil pack options. The brand truly understands castor oil and its uses, and offers so many different types of castor oil packs (for thyroid, liver, breasts, and stomach).
✔️ Hexane-free oil processing. Queen of the Thrones only uses the highest quality castor oil for skin contact. Theirs is hexane-free, organic, and third-party tested — which is exactly what you want for a safe detox product.
✔️ Easy to wash. It’s best to wash your castor oil pack after a few uses (since there can be rancid oil on old packs). Queen of the Thrones has an easy video tutorial.
✔️Fits any body type comfortably. The castor oil pack ties are super stretchy and long, and the cotton itself feels super comfy. I’m never worried about being too bloated or uncomfortable to wear it.
🚫 They use some AI-generated marketing. That’s a deal breaker for some customers, and I’m not super impressed by it either. We’ve got to take more care in the holistic wellness space.
🚫Their products are a bit pricey. I’m not sure if that’s really a con, since you’re paying for the quality of the material and castor oil.
🚫You’ll need to replace your castor oil pack regularly. This isn’t exclusive to Queen of the Thrones, it’s common practice with castor oil packs. The oil can become rancid and the goal is to pull toxins out of the liver. It’s recommended to replace your pack every 3 — 6 months.
